Just not fair
Yesterday I had the great privilege of having dinner with my daughter and 13 of her friends to celebrate her 32nd birthday. She is smiling and funny and warm and loving. She made dinner for all of us. She is a lawyer who also did hundreds of hours of pro bono work this year helping people who did not grow up as lucky as she is. At the dinner table were friends who run clinics who help people with drug addiction, those who fight for unpaid family foster care givers, scientists growing neurons for Parkinson's patients from stem cells. A humbling group that as my husband said "made us feel hope for the future of this country" at a time when it feels difficult to find hope. Today I was out walking in my neighborhood and I ran into someone who works locally who is usually always happy and friendly. Something wasn't right. I asked if he was ok. "My cousin died last night" he told me. "Shoot, I'm sorry. Was she sick?"...
